A single comment from Elon Musk has sent ripples through the semiconductor market, providing a sudden lift to Micron Technology shares. While responding to an analyst from Citrini Research on X, the Tesla and SpaceX chief claimed that the demand for dynamic random access memory used in humanoid robots will eventually exceed all other demands on Earth. The bold prediction triggered a surge of over five percent in Micron’s stock price, highlighting how sensitive investors are to the future of physical artificial intelligence.
The potential for growth is backed by staggering projections from industry experts. Counterpoint Research suggests that DRAM demand from humanoids could skyrocket nearly twenty one times between 2026 and 2030, though Musk believe these needs will be even more aggressive. To illustrate the scale, Tesla’s own Optimus robot utilizes high capacity memory via its AI chips, despite some necessary reductions to manage costs during global shortages. With Tesla aiming to produce a million units annually at its Fremont plant and companies like Toyota looking to deploy hundreds of thousands of robots across their factories, the appetite for high performance memory appears limitless.
This shift toward physical AI represents a critical evolution for Micron as it looks beyond traditional data centers and smartphones. Company CEO Sanjay Mehrotra has already indicated that autonomous vehicles and humanoid robots require memory capacities far exceeding those found in today’s consumer electronics. He noted that level four autonomous systems often require over two hundred gigabytes of memory, creating a massive new addressable market as AI moves from virtual servers into tangible machines moving through the real world.
For investors who have been wary of semiconductor volatility, many analysts argue that current valuations make this an opportune moment to enter. Despite recent struggles in the sector due to concerns over AI spending sustainability, Micron currently trades at relatively low earnings multiples compared to its projected growth. With expectations of a triple digit increase in earnings per share this fiscal year and a burgeoning robotics market on the horizon, the outlook for Micron seems increasingly bullish as it positions itself as the backbone of the robotic age.
