Live Updates: Iran war drives U.S. diesel price to record high as Vance downplays the conflict and its impact

American drivers and shipping companies are feeling the sting of escalating tensions in the Middle East as diesel prices surged to a record high on Friday. The spike comes amid a volatile geopolitical climate involving Iran, sending shockwaves through the energy market just as many Americans prepare for the Labor Day weekend. While regular gasoline has also climbed to unprecedented levels for the holiday period, hitting 4.15 dollars a gallon according to AAA, economists warn that the jump in diesel is particularly concerning because it directly inflates the cost of transporting nearly every consumer good across the country.

Despite these soaring costs, representatives of the Trump administration are attempting to project calm. National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett dismissed the price hikes as a very short term phenomenon during an appearance on Fox News. Hassett noted that he provides daily briefings to the president regarding oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz and mentioned that Saudi Arabia has increased output via pipelines to the Red Sea to help stabilize supply. This effort to downplay the crisis stands in contrast to the volatility seen at pumps nationwide, where gas prices have risen nearly a dollar compared to last year.

On the diplomatic front, the situation remains precarious despite small gestures of goodwill. The U.S. Embassy in Beirut recently praised Israel’s release of several prisoners from Lebanon as a positive step toward a broader peace deal brokered earlier this summer. However, those hopes for stability are dampened by reports that Hezbollah continues to maintain its weaponry and conduct sporadic attacks, effectively stalling key components of a trilateral agreement meant to secure southern Lebanon.

Meanwhile, Washington is continuing its strategy of economic pressure against Tehran. The Treasury Department announced new sanctions against Golden Global Yatirim Bankasi, a Turkish financial firm accused of serving as a critical lifeline for Iran’s Revolutionary Guard by facilitating tens of millions of dollars in transactions. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that any institution supporting what he termed a murderous regime would face severe consequences under Operation Economic Outcast. These aggressive financial moves coincide with mounting humanitarian tension following reported U.S. airstrikes in Iran, highlighted by images showing thousands mourning a four year old child allegedly killed during a strike on a wedding party in Kuhestak.
