Chasing Giants: Why Price Gains Aren’t Always a Signal to Exit

Many investors freeze when they see a stock that has already soared, fearing they arrived too late to the party. However, veteran investor Will Danoff suggests that a doubling or even a quadrupling of a stock price doesn’t necessarily mean the window of opportunity has closed. Speaking with Morningstar strategist Amy Arnott, Danoff echoed the philosophy shared by Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett, noting that it is far better to pay a fair price for a truly great business than to hunt for bargains in mediocre companies. For those eyeing high flyers, the real question isn’t how much the price has risen, but whether the underlying engine of growth remains intact.

Distinguishing between a temporary trend and an enduring powerhouse requires looking beyond surface level metrics. According to Danoff, the litmus test involves analyzing two critical factors: whether customers genuinely desire the product and if competitors can easily replicate it. He pointed to Nvidia as a prime example of long term success driven by adaptability and closeness to customer needs, moving from simple graphics cards to powering the artificial intelligence revolution. Conversely, he recalled his experience with Groupon as a cautionary tale; while it initially grew at breakneck speed, it lacked the defensive moat needed to withstand competition from giants like Amazon.

Ultimately, Danoff believes the most reliable indicator of future success is consistent execution over time. By examining performance trajectories over five year windows and holding management accountable for their promises, investors can determine if a company possesses genuine staying power. While he admits that mistakes are inevitable in investing and that volatility can shake even seasoned pros out of winning positions, he maintains that understanding the business model outweighs the fear of a high entry price. Success in the market is less about timing a bottom and more about identifying quality leadership capable of navigating the next decade.
